C. r^'^eri SOCIETY Clubs - Parties - Meetings MISS WILSON HONORED BY PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN Miss Anne Wilson, who is the older of the two remaining char ter members of the First Presby -1 teran church of Black Mountain, was honored with a surprise birth | day party at the annual birthday meeting of the Woman’s Auxiliary of that church at the home of Mrs Harry Barkley last Tuesday after noon. Miss Anne was also present ed with an honorary life member ship in the Woman's Auxiliary of the Southern Presbyterian church. This was given to her by Circle Number Two. Mrs. W. F. Wade, president, conducted a business meeting, af ter \\hieh Mrs. Gruver, program chairman, introduced Miss Myrtle Johnston, who gave the devot ional, and J. W. Hill, who ex plained the need for the birthday offering which is used for im provements at Montreat and for the training school at Richmond, Va. At the close of his talk a generous offering for these two causes was given. The hostesses, Mrs. Barkley, Miss Sarah Kirby, Mrs. J. j. \\ hite, Mrs. A. G. Callison, and Mrs. B. H. ATTEND DISTRICT HOME I)E MON ST RATION M EETING More than 200 Home Demon stration club members from Bun combe, Henderson, and Transyl vania counties registered for the all-day district meeting held in Brevard last Tuesday. An illustrated talk by Mrs. Walter Pike was the feature of the morning session. Mrs. Pike was a delegate at the convention of the Associated County Women of the WQrld held in Holland last fall. Prior to lunch three-minute re ports were made by county chair men, the women telling of club achievements and how they have been conducted during the past year. Delegates enjoyed a picnic lunch at the First Baptist church. The afternoon session featured a skit “Pennies For Friendship,’’ which related how money could be raised to aid reconstruction in European countries. The sum of $47.00 was raised by passing wooden shoes. The money will be sent to “CARE.” The gavel for the greatest at tendance went to Buncombe county clubs. Those attending from the Black Mountain club were: Mrs. Clarence Frady, presi dent; Mrs. Finley Stepp, vice president; Mrs. Walter Stepp, clothing project leader; and Mrs. John Melton, food conservation leader. MRS. SPEED ANNOUNCES SISTER’S MARRIAGE Mrs. John Speed has announced the marriage of her sister, Miss Evelyn Gilbert, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Gilbert, to Fred FI. Ensley, son of Mrs. Ensley of Black Mountain. The ceremony was performed Saturday, May 22. Mrs. Flnsley attended Black Mountain High school and Blan ton’s Business college. Mr. Ensley attended Black Mountain high school and the Christ School, for Boys. Mrs. Ensley wore an imported dress of raw silk, with accessories of navy blue. Mr. Ensley is connected with the Beacon manufacturing com pany. They will live in Black Mountain. KERLEES CELEBRATE 26TH ANNIVERSARY Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Kerlee were_ honored on their twenty-sixth; wedding anniversary with a din-" ner at Sarg s, given by their daughters, Elsie and Willie, and David Nache, on Thursday, May 20, at 7 d. m. The occasion was also Mrs. Kerlee’s birthday. Lighted candles on the cake and yellow rosebuds were the deco rations. After the dinner they at tended a movie. MONTREAT AUXILIARY MEETS AT ASSEMBLY INN About fifty members and guests gathered in the Assembly Inn to celebrate the birthday meeting of the Woman’s Auxiliary of the Mon treat church. Mrs. Mellinger Henry presided at the business session. Mrs. Rex and Mrs. Rupert McGreg or reported, as official delegates, the meeting of the Applachiu Pres byterial auxiliary, which met in the Black Mountain Presbyterian church. Mrs. C E. Dorsey had charge of the program and con ducted the devotional services. She next introduced Dr. Rupert Mc- Gregor, President of the Mountain Retreat Association, as the speak er of the afternoon. After the meeting delicious refreshments of punch and cake were served by Miss Elizabeth Hoyt and her com mittee. Ihe long table was beau tifully decorated with pink and white birthday cakes with the proper number of lighted pink candles. The next meeting of the Auxiliary will be held June 15 with Mrs. Mildred Byers in charge of the program. MRS. CALLISON ENTERTAINS WITH BRIDGE PARTY Mrs. A. G. Callison entertained with three tables of bridge at her home Thursday night. Lovely ar rangements of pink and yellow roses, and other bouquets of spring flowers decorated the living room. Delightful refreshments w ere served. Guests were Mrs. Chester Sobol, Mrs. A. W. McDougle, Miss Sara McDougle, Miss Lou Lindsey, Mrs. A. J. Hemphill, Miss Doris Byrd, Miss Madeline Fortune, Mrs. Wood row Beddingfield, Mrs. Jeter Rid dle, Mrs. F’red Wilson, and Mrs. Gordon Greenwood. HONEYCUTTS ENT E RTAIN WITH BARBECUE Mr. and Mrs. William Honey cutt entertained with a chicken barbecue Friday evening at their cottage “Oitsa” on Lakey Gap road. The guests were; Dr. and Mrs. S. S. Cooley, Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Tyson, Jr., the Rev. and Mrs. Walter Styles, Mrs. Grace Porter, Mr. and Mrs. Ross Taylor, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Barkley, Mrs. A. G. Callison, Dr. and Mrs. Eugene Knoefel, and Mr. and Mrs. G. L. Kirkpatrick. MISS STOKES ENTERTAINS WITH SEATED 1 EA Miss Julia Stokes entertained the alumnae of the Assembly’s training school at a seated tea in her home on Virginia road the afternoon of Saturday, May 15. Those present, besides the hostess and her two sisters, Miss Minnie Stokes and Mrs. Mellinger Henry, were Mrs. Nelson Bell, Miss Nan nie Watkins, Miss Lois Ellis, Miss Zoulean Anderson, and Mrs. H. C. Morland. MISS HOWELLS HONORED ON HER BIRTHDAY Miss Emma Robinson entertain ed with a party Sunday afternoon in honor of Miss Aurelia Howells birthday.
